Wildflowering L.A. is a native wildflower seed sowing initiative throughout Los Angeles County by artist Fritz Haeg in collaboration with the Theodore Payne Foundation and 50 participating sites, curated and commissioned by LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division). In fall 2013, the 50 sites were selected from an open call based on public visibility and distribution across the county. Owners of selected sites were given free native wildflower seed mixes at workshops in partnership with The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers & Native Plants. Soil preparation, seeding, and wildflower tending was demonstrated and one of four custom wildflower seed mixes was prescribed -- Coastal, Flatlands, Hillside, and Roadside -- inspired by Reyner Banham's 1971 book, Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies. In the spring, with the flowers in full bloom, Haeg tours the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens, the largest and most public of the sites in the initiative. The beauty, color and diversity invites viewers to pay attention to a story of Los Angeles which Haeg notes is "particular and extreme."
